from Backstage.com, with thanks to JforJames of the Newpoetry list for pointing out the story:
Leonard Jacobs talked with both Taylor Mali & his agent about the movement of spoken word performances into theatrical venues, even onto Broadway, and now he wonders, “New Theatrical Genre? Passing Fad?”
The conclusion: yes and no. But reading to the end of Jacobs’ article, you’ll come across ideas about the difference between perf-po & page-po, changing the genre label to market your work, and the evolution of audience. Mali’s solo show Teacher! Teacher! just ended its run at the Bowery Poetry Club -- worth going out of your way to see if he does it again.
