Federico García Lorca’s body to be dug up

Monday October 20, 2003

It’s a crucial part of the legend and mystery of Federico García Lorca: his death at the hands of nationalists at the beginning of the Spanish Civil War. Some of the stories say he was forced to dig his own grave, some say it is not known where his body lies. All agree that “His crime was to be a poet, a republican and a homosexual.” Now the mass grave into which it is believed his body was dumped is to be opened, despite the objections of his family.

from The Telegraph (UK):
Spain to exhume poet killed by fascists,” by Isambard Wilkinson
“One of the greatest mysteries of the Spanish Civil War may soon be solved when the body of the poet Federico García Lorca is exhumed from a mass grave. After decades of impassioned debate as to whether a search should be made to identify Lorca’s remains, local authorities have agreed to allow his body to be dug up.... But some of Lorca’s relatives believe that the poet’s remains should be left to rest in peace.”
