Disquieting Muses -> DMQ Review, Dancing Bear -> American Poetry Journal

Wednesday March 3, 2004
Disquieting Muses was founded by J.P. Dancing Bear and nine other editors in 1997, folded soon after “under the weight of 10 very opinionated editors,” came back to life under the hands of Dancing Bear & managing editor C.J. Sage, and then changed its name to DMQ Review “to help distance the magazine from its early angst-narrative beginnings.” It’s an online incarnation of a classic print poetry-art quarterly, which accepts only email submissions and combines in each issue images from a single artist or photographer with “finely crafted” poems by selected poets.

Now Dancing Bear has bid DMQ farewell and Sally Ashton has taken over as DMQ Review’s editor, having just posted the February 2004 issue. Sage has gone on to edit The National Poetry Review. And Dancing Bear has begun a new venture in print, publishing American Poetry Journal, which accepts only postal submissions and seeks “work using poetic device, favoring... strong, fresh imagery, metaphor, and good sound.” The premier issue is promised for June 2004, and the journal has announced its first contest, the American Poet Prize, which awards $300 and publication, deadline June 30, 2004, reading fee $12.
