Saturday March 12, 2005
from The Asahi Shimbun:
“Sadako Kurihara, A-bomb poet, dies”
“Anti-war poet did her utmost to deliver peace”
“Staunch anti-war poet Sadako Kurihara, herself a survivor of the 1945 atomic bombing of Hiroshima, died at her home here Sunday night, family members said. She was 92. Kurihara is best known for her moving anti-war poem about a baby's birth amid the devastation. Her poem, ‘Umashimenkana’ (‘We Shall Bring Forth New Life’), describing the birth of a baby in a Hiroshima basement shelter, poignantly voiced the anti-war feelings of the postwar generation.”
