Poesie Festival Berlin 2005

Tuesday May 10, 2005
For several years in the new millennium, Literaturwerkstatt Berlin has produced this lively international festival of poets at the end of June. In 2003 it focused on the coexisting cultures of Australia, in 2004 on San Francisco Beat, Ireland & the Celtic languages, and in 2005 the focus is on “VERSschmuggel – The Spanish-speaking world.”

from Jutta Büchter at literaturWERKstatt Berlin:
“The mother tongue of 400 million people and the official language in 21 countries, Spanish is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world and the focus of the poesiefestival berlin 2005. For VERSschmuggel, the Poesiefestival Berlin is gathering some of the most important Spanish-speaking poets whose work will be translated by German-speaking poets and vice versa.

“Poets will work in pairs in a workshop lasting several days and on the basis of a literal translation. Each pair will be helped by an interpreter for the poetic reformulation of their work in the appropriate other language. This way of working is essential as it means the poet is included in the translation process and can work towards the transformation of complex poetic text structure with sound and rhythm coordinates. In this way VERSschmuggel offers the poets an opportunity to be noticed in another language area. The texts will be published in an anthology next year in Spain and Germany. All poets also appear on the poetry Internet site lyrikline.org.”

My wife and I will be going to Berlin in Octorber. Is there any place that you know of where Berlin poets hang out, give readings, etc.
I’d like to connect with some for possible submissionns to my magazine, Free Lunch. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Best,
Ron Offen
