The connection between a poet and his chosen place
from The Boston Globe (with thanks to JforJames of the NewPoetry list for pointing out the story):
“Bringing a poet back to the people: Gloucester filmmaker documents work of Charles Olson,” by James Sullivan
After his influential tenure at Black Mountain College, Charles Olson settled in Gloucester, Massachusetts, a seaport town north of Boston which was the setting for his Maximus Poems (more than setting, really, Gloucester was the central character), and where he lived the rest of his life. Many poets and admirers made the pilgrimage to visit Olson in Gloucester, and he was an engaged and witty participant in local life. But now, 35 years after his death, Olson has been nearly forgotten — a state local filmmaker Henry Ferrini is attempting to correct in his forthcoming Poet & The City: Charles Olson and the poetry of place.
