October 6th is National Poetry Day in the UK
Thursday October 6, 2005
from The Poetry Society (UK):
National Poetry Day has become an annual celebration in Great Britain -- this year the theme is “The Future,” and The Poetry Society has invited poets & poetry readers all over the UK to “vote for the poem they would most like to send into space, to be read in 100 years time.” Poetry Olympics are continuing their celebrations with a Jazz Poetry SuperJam on National Poetry Day in London, featuring “bands of poets and musos” to include Pete Brown, Lol Coxhill, John Hegley, Adam and Michael Horovitz, Libby Houston, Peter Lemer, Michael Lukes, Jennifer Maidman, Keith Moore, Joe Paice, Sophie and Molly Parkin, Ian Smith, Madeline Solomon, Neil Sparkes and Annie Whitehead. The Poetry Cubicle is celebrating National Poetry Day with several showcase events as part of the Norwich Fringe Festival, including performances by Lawrence Bradby, Hilary Mellon, Sarah Law, André Mangeot, Lisa D’Onofrio, Babybarb, My Dark Aunt, Jim Jepps, Salman Shaheen, Caroline Gilfillan & readings by students from Hethersett VC Middle School. And a coinciding Canadian initiative is Random Acts of Poetry week, October 3 - 9, “A celebration of poetry and literacy in cities across Canada, the UK, and Ireland.” Rock on, Commonwealth!
