Jupiter Hammon, America’s First Published African-American Poet

In response to our recent note about Phillis Wheatley, and our repetition of the oft-made claim that she was America’s first black poet, George Wallace wrote to correct our misapprehension: “Her accomplishments aside, and they are impressive, she is not considered the first published African-American poet in America.
