If you believe books are a necessity, send some to the poets of New Orleans
Tuesday December 20, 2005
from Robin Kemp, of the Women’s Poetry Discussion Listserve (WOM-PO):
Please send books and used litmags to:
17 Poets!
c/o Dave Brinks
Gold Mine Saloon
701 Dauphine St.
New Orleans, LA 70116
“No religious tracts, no porn, no junk 1970s trade nonfiction on how to choose shoes, etc. IMPORTANT: You must send them FedEx, UPS, or DHL. Mail service is still not functioning reliably within the city itself (four months later...).
“Please include a note of encouragement, mentioning the Hurricane Poets Check-In site, to the recipients. I can report that these books are very much appreciated, to wit:
“‘...we always need books -- the poets, the teachers, etc. We thank you for sending the ones to Dave! And will continue to utilize that resource.’
“‘...we set things up last night to distribute the books. Everyone was extremely uplifted by this gesture. In fact so much so, that other individuals who attended last night, vowed to bring more book stocks from their own personal libraries to continue this process. However, one of the dilemmas that arose immediately last night was, there was a significant number of others (non-writers, if that’s a category) who lost books in the floods. For instance musicians, painters, and just many regular people in the community who have always strongly supported the efforts at 17 Poets! So, as you can imagine, it was hard-pressed to tell everyone that the books were only for ‘poets & writers’ as you initially requested.’
“So the poets on the ground are sharing the wealth with the poetry series venue's supporters, themselves starving artists in other genres.
“P.S. We still need two complete computer systems running Win 98 or better.”
