In the first month of his continued term as IBPC judge (after Hurricane Katrina forced the interruption of his participation last fall), Dave Brinks has selected these winners: in 1st place, “Stovetop” by Sarah Sloat, a tumble of domestic metaphors in taut 3-line stanzas; in 2nd place, “high altitude in the lips of clams” by Cy Street, a surrealistic post-Beat image stream by a poet whose work was awarded 1st prize last month by another judge; & in 3rd place “The Gospel According to David Copperfield” by Nathan McClain, a conflation of Biblical miracles & carny showmanship. Brinks also made honorable mention of three poems, including “Villanelle on the Sky” by Mitchell Geller, which you may recognize because it was posted on our Forum in an earlier version last summer -- way to go, Mitchell! The judge has not yet offered commentary on the winners, but the IBPC editors have promised to forward his comments when they arrive.
