Stormy Words: Poets on Hurricane Katrina
Since Hurricane Katrina swept over the Gulf coast last fall, we’ve been posting dispatches from New Orleans & from the poets everywhere who’ve gathered to offer help to them. One of the signs of life rising out of the destruction is the persistence of poetry gatherings in New Orleans, most particularly at the Gold Mine Saloon in the French Quarter, where current InterBoard Poetry Competition judge Dave Brinks hosts the 17 Poets! weekly reading series. PBS took notice this week, and filmed a part of the reading on April 10 for NewsHour: “Stormy Words: Poets on Hurricane Katrina” -- the show is available online in streaming video or audio, and seeing it will recall the vitality of poetry as a force in people’s daily lives, its importance in our response to the big events around us.
