Science Fiction Poetry Association offering new awards
Do your poems live in the realm of the fantastic? We’ve just received notice of the first poetry contest being held by the venerable Science Fiction Poetry Association, and if you’re inclined toward fantasy, science fiction, horror or surrealism, you’ll want to be part of this networking group. Founded in 1978 by Suzette Haden Elgin (author of The Science Fiction Poetry Handbook), the SFPA publishes a bi-monthly journal called Star*Line & an annual Rhysling Anthology of science fiction poems nominated for awards. They have just announced their first Science Fiction Poetry Contest, which calls for “speculative poems of 14 lines or less on the theme of ‘mirror(s).’ All forms welcome--haiku, cinquains, tanka, sonnets, free verse, etc., but poems must contain one or more of the following elements: science fiction, fantasy, horror, surrealism or straight science. Send previously unpublished poems only. No reprints.” Entries must be received by June 30, and there are no entry fees.
