7 Things You Should Know About Being a Poet: A List of Lists

Wednesday January 2, 2008
There’s something about the number 7: it has long been associated with luck, it’s the right length for easily memorable phone numbers, it’s the traditional number of the virtues and the deadly sins, the perfect number of items for lists of many things, in fact. Lists of “7 Things You Should Know About Being a Poet” have sprung up all over lately, beginning in November with The Michigan Daily’s publication of Aaron McCollough’s list. Taking the form of a tongue-in-cheek warning from an experienced poet about “a career path that all parents hope their child won’t pursue,” his list has spawned many others from poets all around the blogosphere: Anyone care to distill a consensus from all these, or post another list with the things these poets forgot to mention?

Here are another “7 Things You Should Know About Being a Poet”: a very funny list posted by Christine Klocek-Lim in response to our list of lists. You’ll be laughing!

I never had any inkling this would turn into a “meme,” but I find it intriguing. In truth, the Michigan Daily does 7 Things lists with all kinds of people (every week, I think). I wonder how many have spawned similar lists of lists (7 Things About Being a Agronomist?)?
