When Do Poems Arrive?

Wednesday October 22, 2008

Some poets wait for the flash of inspiration to start a poem, and go about their lives doing other things until the moment the flash hits, when they must drop everything to capture the inspiration in words. Other poets work prepare the ground for inspiration, using exercises or poetic forms, assigning themselves tasks in the hope that something inspired will result from their deliberate efforts. But every poet has a personal writing rhythm, linked to their daily biorhythms — what time of day do your poetic inspirations strike?

from The Daily Telegraph (UK):
Brainwave most likely to strike at 10.04 pm,” by Matthew Moore
“People are at their most creative late at night with 10.04pm the most likely time for a eureka moment, research has shown.... Brainwaves are least likely to strike in the afternoon, according to a survey that suggests office workers have little chance of solving problems after lunch....”

Interesting…which is why maybe so many creative people are night owls…I know that I always get flashes of inspiration right when I am going to sleep, just around ten pm.
