Guide Review
What can I say? How about: this is the Great American Epic Poem of the late 20th century. Seeing the world through Stanford's eyes is like discovering a new language. A classic work by a poet who died way too young, Battlefield predates postmodernism by decades -- Stanford died by his own hand shortly after finishing the book in 1978 -- yet its cut-ups, allusions, samplings, dreamlists and flat out rock’n’roll make this a book to reckon with theoretically as well as practically. Practically, its tales’ll have you roaring, rolling, wailing, whaling, and in general rework your synapses till you can’t speak any language but poetry. If you buy one for a gift, you’d better buy one for yourself, ’cause you’ll never give it away. --Bob Holman
