A Condition, Not an Event
by Andrew Gettler

eavesdropping on
the rain’s conversation,
i hear rumors of
the south of France
at dawn,
of Madrid, populous
and brilliant;
can even feel the fog
dampening Russian Hill;

what i have is Brooklyn,
wet… and not nearly
mysterious enough;

what i have learned
is the sound of your breathing
in the dark;

i have it
memorized.
