“Have your perspectives, your hopes & your plans been changed by what happened in your own life & in the world around you last year? Have your subjects or inspirations shifted?”
   --Poetry Guide

Changes
We desperately miss Our Miss Gwendolyn Brooks, the Mother of the Bowery Poetry Club… Gregory Corso, the Beatest Beat (“Our best poet” -- Allen Ginsberg)… Leopold Senghor, creator of Senegal, major force in Negritude... Yehuda Amichai -- how we wanted to have him visit the Club!…

Bill Wadsworth was fired from the Academy of American Poets -- the changes he wrought there were enormous, especially his adding eleven great, wide-ranging new poets to the previously self-perpetuating Board of Chancellors, allowing such as Robert Creeley, Lucille Clifton, Michael Palmer in the door…

Another change we mourn is the demise of NYC Poetry Calendar -- can it be resurrected? Those interested please apply via email. And thanks to Jackie Sheeler for her great calendaring at poetz.com

Billy Collins is the new U.S. Poet Laureate, causing the New York Times once again to become the arbiter that would sneer at his wonderful, cranky, human poems as “accessible.” Horrors!

The Peoples Poetry Gathering is a sign that Poetry as Global Voice is on the rise. This mega-event was especially provocative in 2001 with readings by Reesom Haile, Poet Laureate of Eritrea, Linton Kwesi Johnson and Jean Binta Breeze, poets laureate of Dub, and Stanley Kunitz, Poet Laureate of the US at the time.

To Come...
The Bowery Poetry Club, a 24/7 poetry club with great coffee and a full bar? I for one cannot wait. See you there! When?
