Changes Bill Wadsworth was fired from the Academy of American Poets -- the changes he wrought there were enormous, especially his adding eleven great, wide-ranging new poets to the previously self-perpetuating Board of Chancellors, allowing such as Robert Creeley, Lucille Clifton, Michael Palmer in the door

Billy Collins is the new U.S. Poet Laureate, causing the New York Times once again to become the arbiter that would sneer at his wonderful, cranky, human poems as accessible. Horrors!
The Peoples Poetry Gathering is a sign that Poetry as Global Voice is on the rise. This mega-event was especially provocative in 2001 with readings by Reesom Haile, Poet Laureate of Eritrea, Linton Kwesi Johnson and Jean Binta Breeze, poets laureate of Dub, and Stanley Kunitz, Poet Laureate of the US at the time.
