The Game
by Lynette Arden

This is the end game.
We read it in the stars.
This is the play without name.
We are mere cat’s-paws.

We read it in the stars;
again there will be war.
We are mere cat’s-paws,
no umpire to mark score.

Again there will be war,
after destruction, famine,
no umpire to mark score,
show us we are human.

After the destruction, famine,
earth littered with mines,
show us we are human,
give us some sign.

Earth littered with mines,
fields sown with salt, stones,
give us some sign:
leave us flesh to cover bones.

Fields sown with salt, stones,
this is the play without name.
Leave us flesh to cover bones.
This is the end game.
