GO! PO! Live!
Dateline: 6/17/97GO! Poetry on Pseudo's channelP.com is the world’s most hyperactive RealTime net broadcasting system for the poets in the house. This lovely electric monster is presided over by the equally lovable electric monster, the one-named Galinsky. Poet, provocateur, dashing madly man about time, this ubiquitous dude is bashing away at the future like a coalminer with multiple pickaxes. We caught up with him at his rolling suite high atop Silicon Alley, Broadway and Houston, NYC.
--Bob Holman
BOB:
Where were you born?
GALINSKY:
Hartford.
BOB:
Why?
GALINSKY:
Born to live in happiness and peace like a cherry on a sundae and to crossbreed so we can continue to define ourselves as one race.
BOB:
Where did you write your first poem?
GALINSKY:
in an all girls’ college dormitory 1/2 drunk outta my skull in a diary.
BOB:
Why?
GALINSKY:
Because I had a lot of fucked-up emotions and was unconsciously sorting through them in the diary. They took the form of an alternative expression, known as "poetry."
BOB:
Tell the story of GO! Poetry.
GALINSKY:
It begins on the stage of a theater. I was thrust into the position of producing a number of radio shows for the Internet and I made sure that the moment of collecting/curating would satisfy my need to create an online poetry form. The Internet was booming, and I jumped on as quick as I could, bringing what I love most to the medium. GO! Poetry is completely independent, unaffiliated, free. . .
BOB:
Does the Internet change poetry? Does po change the Internet?
GALINSKY:
YES! To free and open poets on a Web-defined universal level, which is what we all do anyway, just with our poems. The Net is cool. Poets are creating in Digital Time. This allows the Free Mind of the Poet to synergize with the Free Medium of the Internet.
BOB:
Do the jobs of being a poet and being a father conflict?
GALINSKY:
In no way! The Kid helps. To be corny, he’s like the process of writing a poem: he stops a lot, he’s always changing, always challenging. Sometimes new, sometimes familiar. Watching him develop takes time and offers a type of meditation as I watch him bang around and come up with the next move. Bumping and scratching, getting the balance at the perfect moment -- it’s the process, it’s the poem.
