Since 1982, Anne MacNaughton and Peter Rabbit have been slagging the heat to the top of Mt. Poetry with the (almost) annual (they took off a couple years for revolution, divorce, rehab, and transcendence) Taos Poetry Circus in June and its Main Event: the World Heavyweight Championship Poetry Bout. As a former Contender, let me say: there ain't nothing like it, nowhere. So -- go!

This year, another Total Controversy: Saul Williams of the Universe third eye to third eye with Sherman Alexie of the Spokane & Coeur d'Alene Nations. Annie was just as concerned with the Show as ever -- which is why the Bout is forever historic. For her, the 20th will always be known as the Year the Ring Girl Wanted to Unionize -- and here is her backstage report. (As for rumors that there could be an Alexie-Williams rematch -- stay tuned!)

HIRING A PROFESSIONAL

i.
he’d need to shave his legs
to get the job --
I’d waited 30 yrs
to say that to a guy

ii.
The drag ring girl
asked for more money to buy a dress
the gown she came up with
looked like it cost about
50 cents

iii.
the point is not
the put on
the point is the poetry
