my backyard is honey
and a bumblebee sweeper
broccoli wood, memory of a previous year

chilled wet grass
almost Eden

it’s spring, a celebration
that will pass too fast

an open window wearing winter’s dirt,
a hummingbird’s high pitch whir,
gray clouds march in from the west

what are we fighting for today?

I can’t see you or the bird, God,
but I recognize the sounds of last summer
when we all wrestled for the last fuchsia

now, the flowers are fresh and plentiful
time to wash windows, strip off winter’s forgetfulness,
come to terms and to some kind of truce
