Taylor Mignon says of this poem: “I wrote this little poem for Cid when I was studying with him in Kyoto about 10 years ago. Rereading it now, it’s strange how it seems to be an obituary; he knew every day that living was dying. Cid made many contributions of his own poetry, editorial assistance, and translations from the Japanese to journals in Japan. He was a great teacher for many young Japan-based editors and poets. To attest to this fact, I believe it was John Solt who wrote somewhere that ‘Cid made Kyoto the capital for American poetry in Japan.’ Thank you for all, Cid.”

Taylor Mignon wrote for our Museletter as Japan correspondent from 2001 - 2003. He was consulting editor for Prairie Schooner’s Contemporary Writing from Japan issue and wrote the column “Poetry Mignette” for The Japan Times from August 1999 to April 2001. He published a bilingual book of mostly poetry called Poesie Yaponesia in 2001, has been establishing his reputation as a translator, and as poet is serving under the tutelage of Japanese works.
