IN LA, ANOTHER WEST: NEW POETRY SERIES AT THE AUTRY MUSEUM
From January 17 through March 21, 2002 in the Wells Fargo Theatre, the Autry Museum presents Another West: Poets From Our Community, the first quarter of a year-long poetry series reflecting the many voices of our community. Beginning in January, on the third Thursday of every month from 7 to 9 pm, poets will participate in events that combine the cultural resources of the Museum with the community of greater Los Angeles. This project extends throughout 2002.
The first quarter of the series features six Southern California-based artists: Jerry Quickley, Carmen Vega, Michael Datcher, Jenoyne Adams, Ulli K. Ryder, and Jeanette Clough. Larry Jaffe is Poet Host of the series, and Linda Gamboa will be the cohost. This series is free and open to the public. For more information, please call 323.667.2000, ext. 397.
PEERING THROUGH THE SKYLIGHT
Skylight Books is starting up their author events again at the end of this month after a short hiatus. Some terrific authors are coming up, so we hope you'll join us -- or spread the word to interested friends. Also, let us know if you can't attend but would like a signed copy of the book. Skylight Books is located at 1818 N Vermont Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90027, 323.660.1175.
- Friday, January 25 at 7 pm: Ralph Nader
Crashing the Party: How to Tell the Truth and Still Run for President (St. Martin's Press)
(Note: this is an off-site event.) This is the only Los Angeles event on Nader's tour -- it's a free event, but we recommend you come early to get a good seat. Nader, of course, is one of America's most effective social critics -- he's committed his life to be a passionate, informed and effective advocate for his fellow citizens and consumers. You'll have a chance to hear the true story of his campaign and to ask everything you've always wanted to ask -- about how to raise your own voice against the big guys, and more. Location: Los Angeles City College Student Center, Clausen Hall, 855 N. Vermont Avenue, LA 90029 (1 block north of Melrose Avenue). Free parking, call for more info: 323.660.1175.
- Saturday, January 26 at 7:30 pm: Eddie Muller
The Distance (Scribner)
(At the store) The author of the film-noir classics Dark City and Dark City Dames throws himself in the ring and writes a noir novel set in San Francisco, 1948. In the heyday of boxing, a sportswriter makes a quick decision to help a heavyweight boxer escape a murder rap and finds himself caught in an underworld that is treacherous and illusive.
- Sunday, January 27 at 5 pm: Jonathan Winters
Winters' Tales (Silver Spring)
(At the store) The man who revolutionized improvisational stand-up comedy appears live at Skylight to celebrate the publication of a new edition of his classic book. A crazy genius who is considered to be one of the funniest Americans ever, he's starred in everything from radio and stage shows to first-rate films such as Its a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, his own television show, and Mork and Mindy. Expect the unexpected.
- Thursday, January 31 at 7:30 pm: Joe Linton Art Opening
Our own newsletter has been graced with some hand-lettered work from Joe and tonight we celebrate his amazing new series, Urban Spaces, with a show hung here at Skylight Books. After tonights opening these expressionist portraits of street life in the heart of Los Angeles will be on display through March.
