First Reading in a Coffeehouse

Reader Stories: Giving a Reading

From rewatlingjr

Where your poetry reading was and how you got there

The reading was in a coffee house in the Akron Art Institute in Akron, Ohio. It was 1968 or 1969. I was a volunteer worker at the Renaissance Coffee House and was allowed to read as part of the evening’s entertainment.

Your experience and why it was memorable

I was in high school and had spent most of my class time writing poetry rather than listening or studying. The coffee house staff allowed me some very brief stage time so I brought my notebook and read a few poems, such as they were. My sister played her guitar while I read. It was a special moment, one I’ll never forget.

Lessons Learned

I guess I learned that I’m pretty shy and not that great a poet. The audience was very polite but I was never asked to read there again.
