Poetry is the aural/oral art—meant to be spoken out loud, meant to be heard, and while nothing can quite match the communal experience of live poems recited by the poet, modern technology offers the great gift of recorded poems. Your Poetry Guides have shared many of our choices of the best poetry recordings over the years, and now it’s your turn. Please tell us all about your favorite recorded poems. Tell us about yours

Volume I: “Blue Moves” by Sam Hamill

This fantastic audio CD is part of a series titled “East of Eden.” I also have Volume II: “Pretend” by Jack Grapes, who is/was my greatest writing/poetry teacher.

Poem I’d Like to Listen To

As a child, while sitting in Catholic school, hearing my teacher recite the poem “Tree,” by Joyce Kilmer, it seemed to transport me into a lovely forest filled with trees of every kind. It made me want to learn everything I could about trees. And even up to this day, I can be doing a chore and can hear the nun’s soothing voice, telling of one of God’s greatest creations. That is why Joyce Kilmer is one of my all-time favorites and I could listen to this poem over and over. “Only God can make a tree...” I heard it, I felt it, I was transported, and I still believe that I was lucky enough to be in the midst of those wonderful trees.

HA'OROT-Rav Kook jazz poetry CD

HA’OROT:THE LIGHTS OF RAV KOOK is an awesome poetry CD of contemporary spiritual/universal poetry rooted in kabbalistic enlightenment of the highest order. It’s released on Tzadik Records and presented by Greg Wall’s Later Prophets featuring Rabbi Itzchak Marmorstein. It’s extraordinary and well worth everyone’s listening time. www.haorot.org www.myspace.com/orotharav
